During the month of October, 19-year cancer survivor Letitia Lake is holding her annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Lake is a two-time cancer survivor of breast and kidney for 19 years, and a three-year survivor of a rediagnosis of breast cancer in 2023.
This is the seventeenth year Lake has held the fundraiser with the support of her team of family members, which she calls Knocking Out Cancer.
“I have been do this [fundraiser] since 2009 and I give back to the American Cancer Society. And, that is the reason I give, because it was such a blessing for me and I want to bless someone else along the way,” said Lake, who raises money throughout October. “The first Saturday of October every year, I sell fish plates for the fish fundraiser. And then on the third Saturday, I always do a half-chicken fundraiser.
As a three-time cancer survivor, Lake shared what she thinks is important for others to know about awareness and prevention.
“I always tell people to pay attention to your body. Make sure you pay attention to your body. If something is not right, make sure you get it checked out. Get your mammogram. Please get your mammogram. If you see something that does not look right, do not feel right, get your mammogram. Always talk to your doctor. Find you a great doctor that will talk to you and you talk to your doctor and let your doctor know. And, no questions is a crazy question. Always, if you have a question in your head, ask, ask, Please ask, but please pay attention to your body.”
On the third Saturday of October, Lake’s fundraiser continues when she will sell 1/2 chick plates to raise more money for the American Cancer Society.
“All cancers matter, because all cancer does matter, and all the proceeds go to the American Cancer Society,” said Lake.
