Marcus Murphy: Making a Difference One Piece of Litter at a Time

[tpm_video]

When you drive along the roadways in Hardeman County, one thing that is for certain is you are going to see litter on the side of the road. Although it is a disappointing sight to see, sadly, it is not one that is exclusive to Hardeman County. Marcus Murphy decided to take action, making it his mission to help keep his community clean by picking up litter.

Marcus has been picking up litter in Bolivar since 2022. He considers himself his own boss and starts his day early as he heads out to work. He usually begins his workday at 7 a.m., takes lunch at 12 p.m. for one hour, and ends his day promptly at 4 p.m. Marcus travels on foot everywhere he goes as he carries his signature trash can behind him to collect the litter he picks up every day. If you are not looking for Marcus, you could easily miss him walking through Bolivar and the other areas he covers. He is very unassuming and committed to the work he does. Although he is not paid, Marcus is very professional from the planning of the daily litter route he takes to rhythmically opening and closing the garbage can lid, so the trash he picks up does not blow out.
