When the marching bands from Bolivar Central High School (BCHS) and Bolivar Middle School (BMS) had to cancel their participation in the Hardeman County Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade due to illness of both band directors, that left the Fayette-Ware High School (FWHS) marching band to keep the music alive for the annual event. Although both the BCHS and BMS bands were missed by parade goers on Saturday, January 19, 2026, Fayette-Ware band director Andrew Cheairs and his students performed with great pride and appreciation to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 34th year of the parade being held in Hardeman County.
“It was a tremendous honor for our students to play today,” said Mr. Cheairs, who is a Grand Junction native. “M.L.K. did so much for everyday Americans. The proof of his legacy is in our band and school.”

Before the parade, the band practiced songs they planned to play. Although Mr. Cheairs was there to direct, the musicians seemed to take on a rhythm of their own, which was a result of his training and the students’ familiarity with playing together.

“Music is a universal language that speaks to us all. The beat of the drum, the melody of the horns coming together symbolizes mankind,” said Mr. Cheairs, who also teaches choir, general music, band, jazz band, and theater at FWHS. “From division to unity is the message! I truly hope that we understand the lesson in every song. A lesson of unity and togetherness.”

Mr. Cheairs saw the parade as an opportunity to further the teaching of Dr. King’s message to young people and performing with a purpose.
“Hopefully, students understand that this parade is another way of expressing unity love and peace regardless of color. It is our job to remind them of this. Children focus on having fun. Without parents, teachers, and guardians teaching them, they won’t know,” said Mr. Cheairs. “The shaping of the students mental and social skills, happen along the journey. Playing music with a purpose, not just for fun.”
The people who attended the parade were impressed with the performance of the Fayette-Ware band.

“I am proud of my students because they work hard. Public education financially gets difficult here and there. But children of the USA are remarkable. Give them an opportunity and they will surprise you. We need to be present for our children,” said Mr. Cheairs. “Thank you for thinking of us! We love you Bolivar, Tennessee!”
