Cheryl Smith is a candidate for Grand Junction Mayor.

Mayoral candidate Cheryl Smith and her husband, Ray, moved to Grand Junction in 1995. The search for a home lasted two years before they finally found a place to call their own. Knowing Grand Junction was where they wanted to live, Cheryl described the moment they found their perfect home.

“After looking for more than two years, I found my big, old, white house. It was like coming home,” said Cheryl.

Over the years, Cheryl became involved in the community joining the local Ruritan Club and serving two terms as its president. She became a member of First Baptist Church of Grand Junction where she is very active.

Cheryl saw an opportunity to make a greater impact in her community through politics and decided to pursue a position as a Grand Junction alderman. She served two terms on the Grand Junction board of aldermen before stepping down.

“When my husband became ill, I decided to step down mid-third term. Since his death in 2020, I have become active again in town politics and ran for an open alderman position two years ago. After much prayer and consideration, I feel like it is time to run for the mayoral position,” said Cheryl who shared what she loves about the City. ”Grand Junction has a strong sense of community. After the tornado in April 2024, that was more apparent than ever.  We take care of each other and work together to do our very best for the city.”

Cheryl’s professional background is in accounting, which she believes will be a valuable skill in the mayor position.

“We have a limited amount of revenue, and it needs to be managed and used as efficiently as possible to provide the maximum services to the people of Grand Junction. For Grand Junction, two of the most important things are to be fiscally responsible and to listen to the people,” said Cheryl sharing what she believes Grand Junction needs to grow. “I would love to see jobs for the citizens of Grand Junction, and to accomplish that we need to make ourselves attractive to outside industries.”
