Dorothy and Robert, both residents of Bolivar and clients of Mental Health & Developmental Services (MHDS), Inc., publicly declared their eternal devotion to each other with a commitment ceremony on Friday, September 11, 2026. The celebration, attended by friends and MHDS staff, was a long-anticipated event by the couple who were treated royally on their special day. Dorothy’s favorite color red was not only on the dress she wore but also accented decorations for the ceremony.

A commitment ceremony, different from a marriage ceremony, celebrates the agreed relationship of a couple. There is no marriage license or legal contract. Dorothy and Robert verbally committed themselves to each other.

“This experience is very meaningful and uplifting. It celebrates their connection, values, their relationship, and promotes a sense of belonging,” said Kawanna Stewart. MHDS Bolivar Site Director. “Dorothy has been with MHDS for over 20 years, and Robert has been with MHDS going on two years.”

Ms. Stewart shared that MHDS provides services to individuals in different settings according to their needs and goals within their Person-Centered Support Plan.

“Services provided are Residential Services, Community Day Services, Employment and Community First Services, Family Support, and Medicaid Alternative Pathways to Independence {MAPS PROGRAM). Both residential and community drop-in services are available,” said Ms. Stewart, who has been with MHDS for 21 years. “Loving what you do means finding purpose in every day. Working with people with developmental disabilities is more than a job—it’s an opportunity to inspire, support, and celebrate each person’s unique abilities while learning from their strength, resilience, and joy.”
