International Observe the Moon Night 2026 is being recognized on Saturday, September 19, 2026, and the Lee Ola Roberts Library (LORL) in Whiteville has a special event planned for stargazers of all ages. Amateur astronomer Alan Ferguson will lead a guided tour through the stars for an educational experience. The event will be a nice way to enjoy the outdoors with the cooler temperatures in the evening.
Mr. Ferguson is local to Whiteville and has been an avid stargazer for years.
“He came by to see our telescope that we have on permanent loan from the Tennessee State Library and Archives. It originally came from NASA. (Telescope),” said LORL Glenda Doyle. “Every year, there’s a day set aside to observe the moon. This date changes every year. It’s usually in October, but this year it’s in September,” said Doyle, who always plans unique activities and events for children and adults at the library. “I register with NASA every year that I will be participating and then I report back to them.”
Doyle will have food on hand for eating and using as learning tools for sharing about International Observe the Moon Night. In the past, Oreo cookies were used to show the phases of the moon.
“Last year, we had the TV turned on to NASA and will do so again this time. Mr. Alan will be there to talk about the stars,” said Doyle. “We will probably have one other craft or activity. Kids will be able to look through binoculars too. We will also give kids glow sticks to play with.”
International Observe the Moon Night 2026 will be held on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the LORL. Registration is not required to attend. Call (731) 254-8834 for more information. The Lee Ola Roberts Library is located at 140 West Main Street, Whiteville, 38075.
