Bolivar Central High School (BCHS) student Jakobi Spencer-Turner received an honor of his academic lifetime, an invitation to join the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). Although his education has always been important to him, which is evident from his academic performance in school, Jakobi never expected to receive such recognition. Jakobi joins other high school student scholars across the country in more than 26,000 high schools.

“I was honestly surprised. I know I have good grades, but I wasn’t expecting this,” said Jakobi. “Being accepted by the honor society means that all my hard work matters. I stayed focused and did what I needed to do to get good grades and be recognized. It is important to me because it pushed me to continue to work hard and accomplish my goals.”

The NSHSS is a distinguished academic honor society that has recognized and served high-achieving high school student scholars for 24 years. According to the NSHSS, membership spans from high school to college and beyond, and NSHSS members are academically outstanding emerging leaders in their schools, workplaces, and communities.

In between his studies, Jakobi has managed to maintain his grades and be an instrumental part of the BCHS basketball team. Jakobi admits it has not been easy, but staying focused has been pivotal for his academic and athletic accomplishments. He is looking forward to the upcoming basketball season, which starts in a few weeks.

“Being an athlete and still being able to make good grades and not getting in the mix of drama is a huge accomplishment. I go to school, practice, and stay focused,” said Jakobi. “I’ve played basketball my entire high school career, so balancing extracurricular activities and school hasn’t always been easy.”

Jakobi has goals and is already looking to the future.

“My plans are to enroll in college and major in accounting. I have been accepted to two of my top choices, and I know it’s because of my academic success and hard work,” said Jakobi. “I hope I can continue to be successful academically in order to graduate college and obtain a successful career to be the best man I can be.”
